A common assumption for Comcast Xfinity users is that you have to use the modem router that is supplied by Comcast. But renting a modem from them is not always the right path. After all, who wants to pay $168 a year on a modem that you don’t even own?

This is what you need to know about using your own router with Xfinity.

1. Buying your own modem router combo:

The very first step in using your own device is to buy one! You can easily find a list of the best modem router combo for Comcast Xfinity for more guidance, but there are a few things that you will need to keep in mind. Getting a combo unit will allow you to have both the gateway and the wireless signal, which still avoiding the rental fees you would have to pay by using their devices.

No matter what, you will need to make sure that your new modem is a cable modem and that it will work with Comcast. While most cable modems should work without trouble, it would be better to confirm that before going forward. The modems should state which ISPs they work with, but you can also get a list directly from Comcast.

Fortunately, Comcast has been updating their systems as well, so not only can you get a cable modem, but you can get a DOCSIS 3.1 modem. DOCSIS 3.1 is the latest modem technology available, which means that you will be the most out of your speeds.

2. Call Comcast:

Once you have a modem router combo that will work with Comcast Xfinity, it is time to talk to Comcast. You need to inform them that you will be using your own gateway, instead of theirs, and that you need them to activate your new device.

To physically hook it up, you need to connect the coaxial cable from the wall to the modem and then from the modem to your computer. Make sure it is also connected to the power supply so that when you activate it, it is already good to go. If you want to avoid talking to someone at Comcast directly, and perhaps avoid a sales pitch, you can have it activated online by going to xfinity.com/activate.

Regardless, they need to understand that you are using a new device of your choice. Make sure to have the information about your new device handy when they ask you for it. Once that is settled, you should double-check that there are not any further rental fees if you have been paying them and get a return slip to return any modem or router that you have been renting.

3. Routers:

Another factor to think about is routers. If you have opted to use a modem router combo for Xfinity, then you will already have a router and do not need to worry about it. But, if you found a modem that does not come with the router, you might want to get one.

Most solo routers will work with any gateway, but it is always a smart idea to make sure that it will be compatible with Comcast just in case. The difference with a solo router is that you will need to set it up separately from the modem. You shouldn’t have to talk to Comcast about it, but will need to get inside of your modem. If you are not using Comcast’s modem, their customer service isn’t likely to help you through a router setup process.

When looking at routers, you will need to think about how many connected devices that you will have and how you will be using them. For example, a user who is really only browsing online is not going to need the same speeds as a network that has several streaming devices and many connected devices. Your router will need to accommodate your needs, so pay close attention to the type of router that you will get.

4. What if you want to keep their modem?

If you are using Comcast Xfinity’s modem and are completely happy with renting your modem, you can definitely do that. If you would like to use a personal router with their modem, you will need to put your modem into bridge mode.

To do this, you will need to disable the router that comes with the modem. You will do that through the Admin Tool. Then, you just need to follow the setup instructions that have come with the new router.

Regardless of the type of modem router combo that you decide to have with your Comcast Xfinity, you will want to be sure that it is the perfect one for your network. Take your time shopping and you will have a better chance of finding a great device.
