I’m sure I knew a similar site that did the same thing, a long time ago. I couldn’t find it. I was also surprised to learn that this domain ‘WhatTheme.com’ isn’t even a year old yet, kinda of surprising considering the idea is something that a lot of people have come up with in the past.
What Theme? is a service that wants to help you find a theme that a site you love or adore is using. It could also be a site that you just visited, and you got blown away by the style of it, it doesn’t really matter. I’m sure there are people who will not like the site, because it clearly is trying to generate direct income by linking only to premium listing websites.
I ran the platform on my own blog, and it worked. The only reason it worked is because I’ve left all of the default themes details in my stylesheets and URL paths, not really keen on answering all those technical emails. Yes, What Theme? is no rocket science, but it can save time from lurking through the source of a random website.
It currently supports,
- WordPress
- Ghost
- Shopify
- Tumblr [soon]
I tried it a couple of times, and the results have been 50 / 50 – It’s not great yet, but Catalin Zorzini is working hard to make it happen. If the worst case scenario, you can head over to the ‘Top Themes‘ part of the website, and see which are the most popular themes used by sites that are checked through the platform. You never know where the next flash of inspiration is going to come from.
