When we think about a leader, we see an image of a person who is leading many followers. It is essential to understand that not everyone who supervises or leads is a leader. A leader is someone who motivates his or her followers. His or her job does not only include leading the followers, but impacting them and bringing a change in them. A leader does not dictate to his or her followers, but in fact, becomes an example for them and shows how it is done. Due to his or her charismatic personality, the followers do not fear him, they are so inspired by him that they want to follow him. 

What Are The Different Types Of Leaders?

There are my different types of leaders, each differs from the other due to traits and styles. 

Following are the seven most popular leadership styles: 

Autocratic leaders

An autocratic is a leader type in which a leader is someone who believes he or she is the best in the room while others know nothing and are fools. This kind of a leader believes that whatever they say is right so they take it upon themselves to dictate his or her followers. Such leaders do not believe in communicating and collaborating. They form decisions by little or no input from the team members. This type of leadership style held value in the past, but in the 21st century, it hardly has any significance. 

If you are fast at taking charge of a situation and naturally move into a leadership position then you are likely to be autocratic. These types of leaders are often the first to put themselves forward for any type of leadership role and are very good at taking on responsibility.

Pacesetting leadership

These are the kinds of leaders who set a bar! In every task, they set a bar so high that their team members have to strive hard to achieve the goal. They set the bar high by showing what they expect their team members to do. This kind of leadership style is very effective and gets the work done, better. However, this kind of leadership is not for everyone. The team members tend to get very stress full as they have to strive harder than usual every time. 

Authoritative leaders

People who have this style of leadership are basically those who want the members to follow them. These are visionary people who are confident. They make everything out for the members and then let them know what is expected of them. This type of leadership style is very effective and efficient as these types of leaders believe in not just dictating around or ordering work to others, but they help them and motivate them in every step of the way.  

An authoritative leader will often be prone to micro-management and like to keep a close eye on each person in the team to ensure they are doing a good job. This is not necessarily a bad thing and any good leader should be able to adapt to the team around them. So if this type of approach is needed, don’t be afraid to be strong!

Coaching style leadership

Coaching is a leader type in which the leaders are those who believe that everyone has a talent and the potential to do work effectively. These are more like coaches, who guide their members every step of the way. These leaders act as coaches and help people out by giving them a direction to go towards. These types of leaders are popular for unlocking people’s hidden talents and motivating them to do better. 

If you get your kicks out of transforming and watching others grow, you’re probably more in the coaching style category. This type of leader is strong because they help every person to get the best out of themselves – making the entire team stronger at their individual tasks.

Democratic leadership

People who fall in this category of leadership styles are complete opposites of those who fall in the autocratic style of leadership. They do not believe in making decisions themselves. These leaders believe in communication and collaboration. They do not dictate or order the team members around; they form decisions by taking input from the members. They believe in working together kind of leadership.

This kind of leadership allows the members to grow and be more creative. It makes them feel that their input and work matters. A democratic leadership makes you believe that you can do whatever you want but it actually happens their way. 

Someone who sees themselves as being in collaboration with others is usually a democratic leader. So if you think that all voices should be heard and valued, this is probably you!

Laissez-faire leadership

These types of leaders are also the opposites of autocratic leaders. These types of leaders go with the flow. These types of leaders are delegative and allow the team members to make decisions. This type of leadership is not effective in most cases as research suggests and the productivity and result are also the lowest in this type of leadership. The leader only provides the resources needed while the rest is up to the members. This type of leadership is best for leading those groups which have highly motivated, and highly qualified members who have lots of experience in the work and know what to do. 

If you are happy to pass work down to others and then allow them space to simply execute what they have been delegated, you are employing the laissez-faire style of leadership. 

Affiliative leadership 

Out of all the leadership styles, people who fall in this leadership style act more as mentors. They understand that emotional needs are important so they support it. These types of leaders work by making a connection with the team members. These types of leaders believe that people and their emotional needs come first. 

The best leaders

Put simply, the best leaders get the most from their teams. The actual type of leadership used will vary widely. Most people are prone to a specific type of leadership more than others but in the real world, leaders will use different techniques for differing situations. At times, allowing the space for others to simply get on with things may be best. However, if an extremely important task is being completed, a more authoritative approach may be needed. As you grow as a leader it is great to try different things and figure out what works best for you and your organization.
